Driver, 79, dies in one-car crash on Seven Mile Drive

NEW PHILADELPHIA — A 79-year-old Bolivar man died as the result of injuries suffered in a one-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on Seven Mile Drive east of state Route 800 in Goshen Township.

Virgil A. Ravenscroft was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sgt. Gary Wolfe of the New Philadelphia Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

He said the crash occurred at 12:49 p.m. Ravenscroft was northbound in a 2007 Chevrolet van when he drove off the right side of the road, overcorrected and drove off the left side of the road. The van then went off the right side of the road again, hitting the guardrail. The driver was ejected.

Ravenscroft was not wearing a seat belt.

Road conditions were not reported as a factor in the crash. Wolfe said the pavement was wet in spots, but not icy, and the berms were cleared of snow.

The crash began about 300 feet south of Pointe Dining, Wolfe said.

Seven Mile Drive was closed in both directions for about an hour and a half.

The crash remains under investigation.
