Driver arrested in fatal Christmas Eve crash in Leesburg

After a short chase Wednesday night, Lake County deputy sheriffs and federal marshals arrested a fugitive wanted on charges of DUI/manslaughter in a Christmas Eve crash, which killed three members of a Leesburg family last year, including a 13-year-old girl.

The family was on their way to look at holiday lights.

A federal marshal spotted Zachery Waldo, who was wanted in the crash, on Wednesday night.

But Waldo, 34, fled from officers in a black SUV, forcing other vehicles off State Road 44, crashing into a sheriff deputy’s patrol car, plowing through a neighborhood fence and smacking into a tree before he tried to run away, according to a sheriff’s report.
