Driver from Canada seriously hurt in crash on Palisades Interstate Parkway

STONY POINT − A resident of Montreal, Canada, was seriously hurt Thursday morning when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed while passing other cars on the Palisades Interstate Parkway.

State police said the crash happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday near exit 17 in the town of Stony Point.

Police said their investigation found that a 2021 Hyundai Kona driven by Usher Schwartz, 28, from Montreal, was traveling south at a high rate of speed and passing other vehicles when he lost control of the small SUV.

Schwartz left the roadway and traveled into the center median, where the Hyundai struck a tree and caught on fire.

Police said pieces from the front end of the Hyundai broke loose and went into the northbound lanes, where they struck three vehicles: a 2017 Mazda SUV, a 2020 Honda SUV and a 2015 Toyota SUV.

Schwartz was pulled from his vehicle to safety by multiple drivers and other witnesses. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center In Valhalla, where he is listed in serious condition. Police said the occupants of the other vehicles involved did not require any medical attention.

The Stony Point Fire Department assisted state police at the scene.

State police did not report any charges being filed, but they said the crash is still under investigation.
