Driver charged in hit-and-run that killed pedestrian along Lafourche highway, police say

A man from Gray has been charged in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian Thursday night along a Lafourche Parish highway, State Police said.

Troop C says it responded to the incident about 9 p.m. on La. 182 just east of Bayou Blue Road.

Damion Jones, 34, of Gray was driving east on La. 182 in a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe when he struck the pedestrian, who was walking in the roadway, Troop C said in a news release Friday. Jones then drove away.

The pedestrian, whose name was being withheld pending notification of kin, was taken to an out-of-area hospital and later died, police said.

A short time later, both the Chevrolet and Jones were found at a residence in Gray, where he admitted to driving the SUV. Jones was taken to Troop C headquarters, where he voluntarily submitted to being tested for impairment and was determined not to be.

Jones was booked into the Lafourche jail on a charge of hit-and-run driving with death, Troop C said. The crash remains under investigation.

It was the second fatal crash in Lafourche this week.

A Lockport man died and two others were injured Tuesday evening after the pickup he was driving collided with an SUV along La. 1. Marcelo Garcia-Lopez, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occured about 6 p.m. near Norma Lane, between Lockport and Larose, according to Troop C.

Troop C has investigated 32 fatal crashes resulting in 36 deaths in 2022.
