Driver crashes into North Shore dental office, hits person inside

An investigation is underway after a driver crashed into a dental office on the North Shore and struck a person who was inside on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Emergency crews responding to a report of a crash at the Port Plaza at 45 Storey Avenue in Newburyport around 10 a.m. found a red SUV lodged in the front wall of the Norma Colletta Family Dental Care, according to the city’s police and fire departments.

The 77-year-old driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital in an ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. A person inside the building who was struck by the car refused medical transport.

Officials noted that Newburyport police plan to file an immediate threat suspension with the Registry of Motor Vehicles against the driver.

The city’s building inspector was called to the scene to assess the damage.

A photo of the crash showed shares of glass littering the sidewalk, dislodged bricks, and a toppled front door.

The business will be permitted to reopen when damaged windows are boarded up and two points of egress are available, according to city officials.

Newburyport Police Officer Michael Falite is leading the investigation into the cause of the wreck.
