Driver crashes into Paramus nail salon

An 83-year-old driver crashed his car through the front of a nail salon at a Paramus strip mall on Tuesday. But although several people occupied the narrow shop at the time, most walked away unscathed, according to police, who said one person sustained a minor injury.

Authorities are still investigating to determine what caused the man, a borough resident whom police did not name, to drive into Bliss Nails, a salon in the Highland Shopping Center on East Ridgewood Avenue. By late afternoon, he had not been served with a summons, said Chief of Police Kenneth Ehrenberg.

Emergency personnel responded at about 1:45 p.m. to find that the man's vehicle had breached the building's façade and had come to rest inside the business's front room, leaving shattered glass and store fixtures strewn across the floor, according to Ehrenberg and photos from the scene.

A 59-year-old woman who suffered a minor injury to her hand was the only person harmed in the ordeal.

Firefighters and rescue workers deemed the building safe from further collapse before calling the borough's Building Department to continue inspecting the property, Ehrenberg said.

The salon's owner, who did not give her name, said she was unavailable for comment when contacted by phone.
