Coroner identifies Louisville man who died after head-on crash with school bus

A driver died after a head-on crash with a school bus Friday afternoon in southern Jefferson County, according to Louisville Metro Police.

LMPD spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said preliminary reports indicate a school bus containing a driver, bus monitor and one child was traveling westbound along Mud Lane by Smith Lane when a vehicle crossed over the center line "for some unknown reason" and struck the bus head on shortly after 4 p.m. Friday.

The male driver of the passenger vehicle was the only person inside the vehicle and later died at University of Louisville Hospital. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified him as Brian French, 37, of Louisville.

The driver, monitor and child, whose age was not immediately known, who were inside the bus were taken to local area hospitals and treated for minor injuries, Smiley said.
