Driver dies, corner flagger seriously injured in Woodhull Raceway crash

A highly anticipated night of motorsports turned tragic Saturday night when a driver died and a track worker was injured at Woodhull Raceway.

According to the Woodhull Raceway Facebook page, veteran driver Art Goodier of Osceola, Pa. died after suffering an apparent heart attack and crashing during a qualifying race.

Woodhull Raceway said corner flagger Neil Stoddard of Arkport was seriously injured when he was struck by Goodier's car after it sped out of control in the infield area of turns three and four. Goodier was racing in the third and final qualifying race for the NAPA 602 Crate Sportsman.

Rescue and EMTs accessed Goodier as other personnel treated Stoddard in the infield. Goodier and Stoddard were each taken to area hospitals, with Goodier pronounced dead from what track officials said was an apparent heart attack.

Stoddard is listed in serious but stable condition at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, Woodhull Raceway said.

Officials said the infield was filled with photographers and wrecker crews as well as several other track workers and technical staff at the time of the crash, but no one else was injured.

Painted Post-based New York State Police investigated. Racing was allowed to continue later Saturday night.

Goodier, 50, spent decades competing at Woodhull, beginning his career in the Mini Stock Division prior to graduating to the Crate Sportsman Division. He reached victory lane twice during the 2022 season, on May 14 and June 18.
