Driver dies after crash in western York County, troopers say

A driver is dead after a fiery crash in western York County on Friday afternoon, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

After 5 p.m., a 2007 Ford Escape driving east on Smithford Road -- five miles west of Hickory Grove -- went off the right side of the road and hit a tree before catching fire, troopers said.

The driver, later identified as 82-year-old Julius Tallent, was the only person in the vehicle. He died at the scene, according to Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash remained under investigation.
