Driver dies after crashing into retirement community, injuring 2 others

One person was killed when a pickup truck crashed into a retirement community Tuesday near the Georgia/South Carolina border.

WRDW reports the crash happened at about 1 p.m. at the Vintage Gardens retirement community in North Augusta, South Carolina.

The truck went completely inside the building.

The driver, identified as Timothy Paul Miller, 58, of Augusta, died at the scene according to the Edgefield County Coroner’s Office.

Two people inside the building were injured.

There were visual signs of where the truck traveled off the road, crashed through a wooden fence, drove through grass for a long distance, and then crashed into the building.

Sheriff Jody Rowland told WRDW the coroner’s results aren’t in yet, but he believes Miller suffered a medical emergency while driving.

Rowland said witnesses reported Miller was barely able to keep his head up or his hands on the steering wheel.

Vintage Gardens’ management told WRDW that a mother and daughter were inside the unit that was struck.

A maintenance worker helped pull them out and they were sent to a hospital where they were reportedly stable.
