One person died early Sunday morning following a police pursuit in Chesapeake.
Chesapeake police officers said they noticed a vehicle driving erratically at 2:14 a.m. near the intersection of Berkley Avenue and Campostella Road, according to a news release.
Officers tried to stop the driver near the intersection of Liberty Street and Old Atlantic Avenue, but the driver did not pull over.
Police said they followed the vehicle down Old Atlantic Avenue. The vehicle then turned onto Ohio Street and continued through neighborhoods in the area, police said.
The police department did not say how fast the vehicle was going but said officers slowed their pursuit as the driver continued to increase speed. Police say they started to lose sight of the vehicle, which they did not publicly describe.
Police said the driver crossed the railroad tracks on Chesapeake Avenue near Seaboard Avenue at a “high rate of speed” before crashing into a nearby pole.
The driver was killed after hitting the pole, according to the release.
Police said they believed the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when they initiated the pursuit. They did not publicly identify the driver or provide any description.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
