Driver in fatal Christmas Eve crash charged with DUI and involuntary manslaughter

Police department handbooks often leave the chain of command to superior officers, but the process of where these reports go after that point can differ by individual departments.

SEWICKLEY HEIGHTS – An 18-year-old driver involved in a fatal Christmas Eve crash is now facing various charges in the incident.

Court documents show that Luke Flowers, of Sewickley, was charged after Allegheny County Police investigators determined his actions were responsible for a fatal car crash in Sewickley Heights. The accident caused the death of one passenger and injuries to another person in the vehicle.

According to police, first responders were notified of a single-vehicle crash in the 500 block of Fern Hollow Road at 10:14 p.m. Dec. 24. When responding officers arrived, they reported the car had left the road and came to a stop at a hillside 30 feet away.

Police said the driver, Flowers, did not sustain any injuries. But two female passengers, an 18-year-old passenger in the front seat and 20-year-old Camden Higgins, who was sitting in the back seat, were rushed to the hospital. Higgins died on Christmas Day from injuries sustained in the crash.

Homicide detectives and accident recreation investigators determined Flowers was responsible for the crash and issued a warrant for his arrest on Feb. 3. Flowers turned himself in on Feb. 4.

Flowers faces various charges, including homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, DUI, exceeding the speed limit and reckless driving.
