Driver, front passenger seriously injured after van veers off Route 287 in Riverdale

A New York man and a teenager were seriously injured after a van with 10 occupants went off Route 287 near Riverdale and down an embankment early Tuesday morning, police said.

A State Police investigation determined a Ford Transit van heading northbound was taking the Exit 53 ramp when it went off the roadway and struck a curb shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Charles Marchan said.

The van then went over a grass median and became airborne. It traveled over the entrance ramp and guardrail before striking several trees on its way down the embankment, Marchan said.

The 20-year-old driver of the van, a resident of New Square, New York, and front passenger, a 15-year-old from Monsey, New York, both sustained serious injuries in the crash. The eight other passengers in the vehicle suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
