Driver hurt after school bus crashes in Gaston County; kids OK, firefighters say

A bus driver was taken to the hospital after a school bus crashed Wednesday morning in Gaston County, firefighters said.

Around 7 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters were called to Delview and Doc Wehunt roads in Cherryville. When they arrived, they found a bus that was seriously damaged.

According to the Hugh’s Pond Volunteer Fire Department, five children were on board when the crash happened and were able to leave it unhurt.

The driver was partially pinned, firefighters said, and crews were able to bring them through the back emergency door of the bus. They weren’t seriously hurt, authorities said.

Firefighters said it took almost two hours to clear the scene.

Authorities did not say how the crash happened, but said it is still under investigation.

No further information was released.
