Driver killed in crash on Midlands road that left another hurt is named by SC coroner

One driver was killed and another was hurt in a crash on a Midlands road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Thursday.

Tamara Ann Stephens was the driver who died in the accident, according to Kershaw County Coroner David West. The 61-year-old Abney resident died at the scene, West said.

The two-vehicle collision happened in Kershaw County at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell.

Stephens was driving a 2008 Toyota Scion east on Lockhart Road when it collided with an eastbound 2021 Hyundai Genesis near the intersection with Stretch Drive, Tidwell said. That’s in Camden, in the area between U.S. 601 and U.S. 1.

After the crash, the Toyota ran off the right side of the road and the Hyundai flipped over, according to Tidwell.

The driver of the Hyundai was injured and taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital, according to Tidwell. Further information on that driver’s condition was not available.

Tidwell said there was also a passenger in the Toyota crossover SUV, but information on that person’s condition was not available.

West said that Stephens was wearing a seat belt, but there was no word if any of the other people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
