Driver killed when car crashes into power pole in Cathedral City

A driver died after crashing their sedan into a power pole in Cathedral City early Saturday morning, police said.

The crash on Highway 111 near the Glory to God Ministries church was reported at about 2:50 a.m., according to Cathedral City police.

A red Toyota was traveling westbound at what a press release from the department describes as "a high rate of speed" when it drifted off the roadway. The car hit a Southern California Edison power pole. The collision caused the sedan to roll over and the pole and power lines to fall down.

The driver, who has not been publicly identified because police said the coroner was still in the process of notifying their next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they don't know yet whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Highway 111 was closed for several hours in both directions but has since reopened.
