Driver killed after car veers down embankment and onto Highway 99 in Galt, police say

A driver was killed Saturday after a car traveled down an embankment and onto Highway 99 in Galt, where it was struck by a tractor-trailer, police said.

The car, an Infiniti sedan, was heading eastbound on C Street near Fairway Drive around 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it veered off the roadway down an embankment and entered southbound lanes of Highway 99, the Galt Police Department said in a news release.

A tractor-trailer struck the Infiniti, leading the truck to overturn while the Infiniti ended up in the center divide area, police said.

Cosumnes CSD Fire Department personnel pronounced the male Infiniti driver dead at the scene, police said. His identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

The tractor-trailer driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, according to the news release.

The cause of the fatal crash remains under investigation. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors, pending a toxicology report from the coroner, police said.

The crash closed all southbound lanes of Highway 99 for about three hours Saturday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office, as authorities investigated and Caltrans personnel worked to clear debris.
