Driver killed in head-on collision on Sterling Highway near Anchor Point

Dec. 3—One person died and another was injured in a head-on collision Friday afternoon on the Sterling Highway near Anchor Point, Alaska State Troopers said.

A Dodge pickup and a Kia SUV collided in the southbound lane of the highway near Mile 162 around 12:15 p.m., troopers said.

The driver of the SUV died at the scene and troopers said the other driver was brought to South Peninsula Hospital after complaining of back and chest pain. Neither vehicle carried passengers, according to troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel.

Troopers said they notified the deceased driver's next of kin, but did not publicly identify them immediately Friday afternoon.

An investigation continues. Troopers asked anyone with information about the collision to call 907-262-4453.

The Sterling Highway closed in both directions near the crash for several hours on Friday. Traffic was diverted onto the Old Sterling Highway.
