Driver killed when his truck strikes broken-down vehicle on side of Interstate 40

The Knoxville Police Department is investigating two unrelated serious crashes, including one that was fatal, a department spokesperson said in a press release.

Just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a multicar crash with injuries on Interstate 40 west near Cedar Bluff Road, the release stated.

Police say a Ford pickup truck had broken down and the driver pulled off the road to the left-hand shoulder. It was struck by a Chevrolet pickup and that driver was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the release said. His identity has not been released. The driver of the Ford was not hurt.

That crash remains under investigation by KPD crash reconstruction personnel.

Injured man found lying in road believed to be hit and run victim

Separately, at about 12:50 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to a report that an injured man was lying in the street on Broadway near Old Broadway, the release stated. Officers found the man on the shoulder of the southbound side of Broadway. He was taken to a hospital with possibly critical injuries.

Evidence suggested the man was hit by a vehicle but it was no longer on the scene. The victim, whose identity has not been released, is in serious but stable condition, the release stated.
