Driver leads police on high-speed chase on Florida’s Turnpike

Authorities arrested the driver of a silver Mercedes-Benz who led them on a high-speed chase on Florida’s Turnpike on Wednesday evening.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a shooting near South State Road 7 and Kimberly Boulevard in North Lauderdale just before 6 p.m. When they arrived, they discovered two drivers had confronted each other and one shot at the other, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

No one was struck in the shooting. Deputies chased the shooter’s car down the turnpike into Miami-Dade, and WSVN-Ch.7 reported the driver of the Mercedes was traveling over 100 mph.

The driver surrendered in Miami-Dade, where deputies arrested him. The Florida Highway Patrol and the Miami-Dade Police Department assisted, and Broward Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit is investigating.

Authorities did not release the name of the driver or others involved in the shooting.

It’s the second dangerous incident on Florida’s Turnpike in 24 hours. On Tuesday night, a man died in what authorities said might be a road rage shooting on the turnpike near West Palm Beach.

Anyone who witnessed that shooting or the road-rage incident is asked to contact the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office at 561-688-3400.

Anonymous tips can be given to Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458-8477 and online at crimestopperspbc.com.
