Driver’s license services unavailable Saturday at Virginia DMVs due to system outage

Customers won’t be able to apply for, renew or replace driver’s licenses at Department of Motor Vehicles centers statewide Saturday due to a system outage.

A DMV news release said Verizon network maintenance will affect the National Driver Register, an essential external licensing system. The DMV is required by law to check the federal database before issuing driver’s licenses, learner’s permits, commercial driver’s licenses or driver privilege cards.

Without access to the system, those services will be unavailable. DMV offices will be open for all other services, including transactions involving identification cards. Some may be eligible to renew diver’s licenses online.
