Driver faces DUI charge after hitting, killing pedestrian in northwest Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man faces a DUI charge after and hitting and killing a pedestrian in the northwest Las Vegas valley.

On Saturday around 12:45 p.m., Metro officers responded to the area of Decatur and Lake Mead boulevards after a report of a crash.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements showed that a 2010 Honda Pilot SUV was driving east on West Lake Mead Boulevard when it began to veer to its right.

At the same time, a pedestrian was walking on the sidewalk on the south side of Lake Mead Boulevard. The Honda failed to stay in its lane and drove onto the sidewalk for a “short distance” before hitting the pedestrian and a fence, police said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Honda stayed at the scene but displayed signs consistent with prescription drug use. The driver, identified as 51-year-old Jose Ramirez, was arrested on a charge of DUI resulting in death.

This death marks the 126th traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction for 2023.
