Driver shot on Kennedy Expressway in Avondale neighborhood: state police

A motorist was shot on the Kennedy Expressway on Saturday morning near Belmont Avenue on the Northwest Side, officials said.

About 6:35 a.m., Illinois State Police troopers responded to a call of a shooting on the inbound lanes near Belmont, state police said. They learned a male driver, who was the only person in his vehicle, had been shot.

A man with at least one gunshot wound to the arm called emergency services and exited the expressway onto Fullerton Avenue, where an ambulance picked him up and transported him in serious condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

State police said he was expected to survive.

There was no crash as a result of the shooting, and the age of the victim was not immediately clear.

All lanes reopened just after 10 a.m., after being shuttered about 8:40 a.m. with traffic diverted off to Kimball Avenue, state police said.
