A cyclist died after being struck by a vehicle in a neighborhood just south of downtown Salem Tuesday afternoon.

Salem Police responded to reports of a crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian near Leslie Street and High Street SE east of the Salem Public Library at 3:45 p.m. Responders later discovered the crash victim was a cyclist, not a pedestrian.

The cyclist, identified as 53-year-old Marganne Allen, was taken to Salem Health, where she later died from her injuries.

The 37-year-old driver of the involved vehicle was not injured and remained at the scene. No citations or arrests have been made as of Wednesday afternoon.

The preliminary investigation by the Salem Police Traffic Team revealed Allen was riding southbound on High Street approaching Leslie Street when the driver of the truck traveling eastbound on Leslie Street entered the intersection and crossed the bicyclist’s path of travel, resulting in the crash.

The scene of the crash rests at the bottom of a hill as High Street transitions from downtown into the Bush's Pasture Park neighborhood. The intersection has a stop sign for those traveling eastbound on Leslie Street. There is no stop sign for those traveling on High Street.

Salem Police officials said the traffic team's investigation into the crash remains underway.
