Drivers can expect delays on this section of College Street in Lacey through January

Drivers can expect delays on College Street Southeast, south of Lacey Boulevard, so that crews can locate underground utility lines, the city announced.

The work, which started Monday, will continue 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through the end of January.

During work hours, there will be temporary single-lane closures; however, traffic will remain open in both directions, according to the city.

The temporary lane closures will affect an area that runs from Lacey Boulevard to 18th Avenue Southeast.

The need to locate underground utility lines is tied to the next phase of widening on College Street, Transportation Manager Martin Hoppe said Monday.

The previous phase widened the street between 18th and 25th avenues and added a roundabout at 22nd street.

The next phase will widen College Street between Lacey Boulevard and 18th and add a roundabout at 16th Avenue.

However, the city hasn’t secured all the funding for the next phase of widening, Hoppe said

“We currently only have funding for preliminary design of the project,” he said in an email. “Optimistically, the project wouldn’t start for at least another 3-4 years.”
