Who’s driving your child’s school bus? It’s very hard to find out: I-Team

MADISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) – Cell phone video obtained by the FOX 8 I-Team captures the moment a Madison school bus driver allegedly crashed into a stop sign.

The young daughters of Cassie Yurjevich were on the bus.

“My youngest got hurt,” Yurjevich said. “The driver slammed it so hard, she sprained her neck. She went straight into the seat in front of her and she bent her neck.”

The accident happened Feb. 13, and it’s just one of many that have taken place all over Ohio this school year.

I-Team: CLE official crashes city car with kids on board

The I-Team has found parents have no easy way to find out the driving records of the people behind the wheel driving their children.

“I think it’s every parent, not just in Ohio, that needs to know because we’re trusting the school system with the safety of our children,” Yurjevich said.

Bill Andexler, a veteran Northeast Ohio School Transportation Executive, says parents need to trust district officials.

“For the parent that is out there trying to get information on their bus driver, there is nothing that is published publicly that they can go and get,” Andexler said. “You have to put your trust in the district and there are checks and balances for the district.”

He added that districts are required to go through a database and check driving records of all bus drivers at least twice a year.

“I, myself, when I was running a district, I would check it every month,” Andexler said.

As for bus driver training records, the Ohio Department of Education says it also keeps a database to make sure training certificates are up to date. But again, this is not a website parents can see.

Back to the Madison bus crash. The district called the mother of the child hurt and said the driver would be taken off the road. The district also issued a statement saying the driver no longer works there.

The mother also filed a police report. We checked with the police chief Wednesday and he tells us the report is not yet complete. The case remains under investigation.
