Drone footage shows Jakarta cemetery near capacity
Pondok Ranggon cemetery located in East Jakarta is one of the funeral complexes designated by the Jakarta government as a grave for Covid-19 victims, in addition to another tomb located in West Jakarta called Tegal Alur.
The land specifically for the burial of Covid-19 victims at the cemetery complex is running low. Hence, the local government is currently expanding the area to about 6,500 square meters, as reported by local media.
The expanding areas also provide additional responsibility for grave diggers in the area, from the usual 10 graves per day to at least 30 to 40 graves or even more each day. Pondok Ranggon has undergone five expansions.
Indonesia reported its biggest daily rise in coronavirus infections on Wednesday(September 16) with 3,963 new cases, data from the country's health ministry showed.
For months the country has struggled to stem a rise in transmissions, with nearly 229,000 cases and a death toll of 9,100, the second highest in Asia after India. It also has one of the world's lowest testing rates.
