Droughts and desertification threaten farmlands in Brazil

STORY: Scientists warn that global warming is setting off droughts in Brazil's semi-arid region

causing an 'accelerated desertification process' in its farmlands

“That area we’ve identified of 5,000 square kilometres (1,930 miles) will grow to 15,000 square kilometres (5,791 square miles). It shows the accelerated desertification process, this is climate change in Brazil, specially in the semi-arid region.”

Researchers say the area affected by drought is expected to triple in the coming years

“It impacts Brazilian productive sectors, including large and small farming, such as the one in the semi-arid region. It mainly affects the most vulnerable population of the semi-arid region.”
