Have your say: Are you still doing Dry January?

With freezing cold weather and fresh lockdown restrictions marking the start of 2021, it seems Brits are already giving up on giving up alcohol.

Dry January is when many put down the wine glasses for the month after the traditional excesses of the Christmas period.

However, after Christmas was hit by tight regulations amid the rise in COVID cases, millions experienced a very different festive week.

With lockdown keeping millions of Brits stuck indoors, the effect has seen weekly wine sales up a third from this time last year, while beer sales have increased by 49%, according to The Sun.

Pubs and bars remain closed while the UK battles to stem the COVID tide, and some supermarkets are reporting huge spikes in sales of spirits since the start of the year.

And it’s not just in the UK – some Americans have also made an exception this year and are having a “damp” month instead.

A recent YouGov survey found that 8% of people had already admitted defeat in giving up alcohol for the month, while 20% admitted to still trying – despite some slip ups.
