Dua Lipa Is the New Goth Girlfriend of Instagram

According to Know Your Meme, likely the most official source for the origins of that lighthearted Internet fodder, the concept for goth girlfriend was born out of a South Park meme that someone with the username Gothstan posted to Tumblr in 2014. The basic premise is pretty simple: People want goth girlfriends (who are apparently difficult to find). It’s spawned a number of different iterations and interpretations over the years, and recently came back into public consciousness when a vampiric-looking Grimes accompanied Tesla mogul Elon Musk on the Met Gala red carpet last year.

Now, in somewhat of a twist on the form, Dua Lipa is wholeheartedly embracing the moniker. The British pop star posted a photo of herself in front of a piano in a black Vetements sweatshirt dress, the hem of which just grazed her skintight platform boots, along with the caption: “goth gf in the studio.” Could she be leaving pop behind in favor of dark wave or horror punk? Has she just been listening to lots of the Cure? Whatever the reasoning behind Lipa’s somber sartorial turn, she’s definitely our newest goth crush.
