The 19 members of the 2022 Ohio State Fair Junior Fair Board include two students from central Ohio high schools.

Carter Freeman is student at Grove City Christian High School and represents the Boy Scouts of America on the junior fair board; Julia Joos is a student at Dublin Coffman High School and represents technology education.

This year’s members of the junior fair board are 16 to 20 years of age and come from across Ohio.

Several are second-year members, but Freeman and Joos are new to the junior fair board.

Joos, a rising sophomore at Coffman, said she sought to join the Junior Fair Board for the experience.

"You get to make so many memories and friends that last a lifetime," Joos said.

The experience will also provide skills to serve her in the future, she said.

Joos is to also use the role to further other students in studying STEM-related courses in high school and college.

"Representing technology education means that I will be educating others on STEM," said Joos, a member of Coffman's Bad Robots team, a class in which students from all three Dublin high schools engineer robots.

Joos is also a member of Key Club, the student arm of Kiwanis International, the 4-H Shooting Stars club and Coffman's art club.

Freeman is a rising senior at Grove City Christian where he has attended school since kindergarten.

"I wanted to be a part of the board to be able to help my community in some way, and this was the one of the biggest I found," he said.

Freeman said the experience will allow him to meet people and develop public-speaking skills.

Having been involved in Scouting since the first grade, Freeman said he is working toward achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

Junior Fair Board Members are selected to represent their respective organizations as ambassadors for 4-H, FFA, Girl Scouts of the USA, Boy Scouts of America, the American Farm Bureau Federation and technology education, but the board also includes several at-large members.

The 12-day Ohio State Fair is slated for July 27-Aug. 7 at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave., in Columbus.

“The Ohio State Fair Junior Fair Board is comprised of eager young leaders who have demonstrated their dedication to the state of Ohio through their respective organizations. This opportunity will help these youth expand upon their leadership skills and contribute to the success of this year’s Ohio State Fair,” Virgil Strickler, general manager of the Ohio State Fair, said in a press release.

“Each candidate goes through an application process within their organization, followed by an interview process with the Ohio State Fair Junior Fair Board interview panel. These members are selected based on their leadership skills, participation in their organization and community involvement,” and serve a two-year term on the board, said Alicia Shoults, assistant general manager and marketing and public relations director of the Ohio Expo Center and the Ohio State Fair.
