Senate to continue voting on changes to Biden’s coronavirus relief bill

The Senate will continue to consider changes to President Joe Biden's COVID-19 stimulus bill on Saturday, continuing an all-night session in which they voted on proposed amendments to the $1.9 trillion measure. For nearly 12 hours Friday, senators negotiated over proposed changes to the massive package’s unemployment benefits. Much of the impasse focused on Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., a moderate Democrat who expressed interest in plans from Republicans and Democrats — but ultimately supported a Democratic compromise deal to extend a weekly $300 unemployment benefit through August. The legislation, dubbed the American Rescue Plan, would send out a new round of $1,400 stimulus checks, $350 billion to help cash-strapped states and cities, and $130 billion for schools confronting the coronavirus pandemic.

Team LeBron vs. Team Durant: NBA All-Stars meet in Atlanta

The NBA’s All-Star Game is this Sunday, but because of an injury, Eastern Conference captain Kevin Durant will miss the game in Atlanta. As for LeBron James, he’ll try to remain undefeated in his 4th season as an All-Star captain. The players will have to navigate through pandemic rules this year, and events will happen on a single day instead of three. The last shot of Sunday’s affair will be worth $300,000 for either the Thurgood Marshall College Fund or United Negro College Fund, the NBA said in revealing how an estimated $3 million in charitable donations from the contest will be distributed. The organizations, which support historically Black colleges or universities, will be the primary benefactors, each guaranteed $500,000 in scholarship funding before the game even starts and with an additional $750,000 at stake during the game.
