Dudley woman among 3 people killed in wrong-way crash in Maine

A celebration of life for a 22-year-old woman, who was one of three people killed in a wrong-way crash last week on the Maine Turnpike, will be held in her hometown of Dudley next week.

Julia B. Chapdelaine, a senior studying public health at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, died Nov. 29 in Portland. She will be receiving her degree posthumously in the spring.

Brandon Crawford-Adams, 23, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, was driving and Chapdelaine was a passenger in a 2018 Honda Civic that was traveling southbound on the northbound side of the interstate around 9:40 p.m. Nov. 29 when it collided with a 2013 Toyota RAV4 driven by Alpha Anastacio, 33, of Portland, Maine, Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said.

Upon impact, both vehicles caught on fire and became fully engulfed. All three victims were dead upon emergency responders’ arrival, Moss said.

Crawford-Adams is a former University of New England student who played wide receiver for the university’s football team. He was last enrolled at the University of New England in the 2022 fall semester, university spokesperson Sarah Delage said

“The UNE community is mourning their deaths, and our heartfelt condolences go out to Julia and Brandon’s families and loved ones, as well as the many people who knew and loved them at UNE,” Delage said.

Chapdelaine was a graduate of Shepherd Hill Regional High School and a member of the “Fantasy and Illusion” show choirs and field hockey team.

“Julia lit up every room she entered with her beautiful smile,” according to her obituary. “She lived life to the fullest with the kindest soul. Her family and friends were her entire world. She will always be loved and never forgotten.”

A celebration of her life is scheduled for 11 a.m. Dec. 16 at Bartel Funeral Home & Chapel, 33 Schofield Ave., Dudley, with calling hours from 9 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to nomoredysphoria.org, a cause, according to the obituary, that was close to her heart.

The crash remains under investigation.
