A major intersection in Ames is closed this week for sewer work

A significant road closure is impacting one of Ames' busiest intersections this week.

The intersection of South Duff Avenue and Lincoln Way will close for six days on Monday, Nov. 27, to fix a manhole. The structure is in danger of collapsing, which would jeopardize the integrity of the street, Ames Civil Engineer Hafiz Ibrahim said in a release. Construction is anticipated to last through Friday, Dec. 1.

"The existing sanitary sewer manhole at the intersection of South Duff Avenue and Lincoln Way is deteriorated and needs replacement," Ibrahim said. "The work includes the removal and replacement of the sanitary sewer manhole at the intersection."

Northbound and southbound traffic on Duff Avenue can follow detours around Lincoln Way, though motorists will be permitted to turn right in both directions. Drivers will also be barred from turning left onto Lincoln Way in either direction.

Eastbound and westbound traffic on Lincoln Way will be reduced to one lane. Motorists will also be prohibited from turning left onto Duff Avenue and may only turn right.

Detours are posted along Duff Avenue for those traveling north and south, and along Lincoln Way for those attempting to access Duff Avenue.

The City of Ames has contracted with Jet Drain Services LLC to complete work to the manhole, which Ibrahim anticipated to continue through most of the week.

Alternative routes during the construction period are encouraged.

Sanitary repairs add to current Duff construction

Traffic in the southbound lane of Duff Avenue has been congested for two weeks due to two water main projects. A new water main is being installed on the east side of the street, while the west side is in the midst of sanitary sewer repairs.

The city is improving underground infrastructure in anticipation of an Iowa Department of Transportation resurfacing project along US Highway 69 on South Duff Avenue and Grand Avenue.

The resurfacing is expected to start in the spring, but initial construction is already underway. The contractor is anticipating the sewer and water main work to be finished by Dec. 21, depending on weather.
