Duke basketball holds off Notre Dame as Coach K returns to Cameron Indoor

DURHAM – Mike Krzyzewski returned to Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time since his retirement last April and Duke basketball made sure its former coach witnessed a win.

The Blue Devils (18-8,9-6 ACC), coming off a controversial overtime loss to Virginia over the weekend, bounced back with a too-close-for-comfort 68-64 victory over Notre Dame on Tuesday night.

Notre Dame came into the game near the bottom of the ACC but refused to go away, getting within one point in the final minute.

With the clock winding down and leading 63-62, Duke's Mark Mitchell hit a corner 3 with 10.8 left in the game for a four-point lead. The Irish countered with a quick layup and Tyrese Proctor put the game away with two free throws with 3 seconds remaining.

Duke remains undefeated at home (13-0) under first-year coach Jon Scheyer as Coach K returned to honor Notre Dame coach Mike Brey, a former assistant at Duke, who after 23 years plans to either retire or leave the Irish after this season.

Notre Dame (10-16, 2-13) has yet to win a game on the road this season.

Duke led by as many as 14 points in the second half but couldn't stop Dane Goodwin. The Irish's senior guard scored 17 straight points to cut the Blue Devils' lead to 66-62 with under five minutes remaining.

No ankle woes for Filipowski

Freshman Kyle Filipowski was questionable to play Tuesday after suffering an ankle injury in the final play of the overtime loss to Virginia. But Filipowski was cleared a few hours before tip and even started for the Blue Devils.

After being held scoreless against the Cavaliers, he led Duke with 10 first-half points, two rebounds and two assists. The Blue Devils led 31-23 at the break with Dariq Whitehead adding nine points on 3 of 3 shooting from the 3-point line.

Filipowski would finish with 22 points, the only Blue Devil in double figures.
