Duke Energy details layoffs, severance costs in new SEC filing

Duke Energy Corp. has laid off more than 500 employees since the beginning of 2021 as it strives for more efficiency and responds to the demands of a rapidly changing industry.

The 233 employees Duke laid off at the end of 2022 to lower operating costs were fewer than the 290 laid off in 2021, according to a new filing with federal regulators.

The severance for those employees amounted to about $57 million of the $105 million in expenses for workplace and workforce realignment the company reported for 2022. The figures are listed in the annual financial report, known as form 10-K, Duke filed today with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
