Dumas girls, Randall boys win Region 1 Wrestling Tournament

A pair of familiar boys and girls wrestling teams secured championships last weekend during the Region I Tournament held at First United Bank Center in Canyon.

The Randall boys won the Region I tournament with 220 points, while the Dumas girls won with 156 points. There will be seven schools from the area sending at least one boys wrestler, while 10 schools will send at least one girls grappler to the state tournament set for Feb. 17-18 at the Berry Center in Cypress.

In the girls 100-pound bracket, Tascosa's Zurri Zamora is the regional champion and will be joined at state by Tammy Salazar of Caprock, who finished fourth. Michael Ruiz of Randall is the boys 106-pound champion, while Caprock's Jose Palacios is heading to Cypress after finishing third.

In the boys 113-pound category, Ethan Sims of Tascosa is going to state after taking the regional championship. Jaycob Banda of Amarillo High will join after finishing in second place. In the girls 107-pound division, Talyn Burkhalter of Tascosa is going to state after finishing second.

Three local girls will be going to state in the 114-pound class: Deja Salazar of Caprock as the champion, Miliyah Pacheco of Tascosa as the runner-up and Palo Duro's Victoria Vasquez punched her ticket to state after finishing fourth. Two boys in the 120-pound class are advancing after Malachi McClenton of Caprock took down Kason White of Randall in the finals. White will go to state, as well, as the runner-up.

In the 126-pound boys category, Hunter Bogner of Dumas is the regional champ, Kaden Ford of Tascosa is the runner-up and Ashton Bennert of Randall was the third-place finisher.

Dumas' Emily Loya will be going to state after winning the 126-pound championship while Mia Alonzo of Hereford took third and will advance to state. Thomas Pacheco of Tascosa is the 132-pound champ, Dumas' Brandon Smith is the runner-up, Randall's Ethan Mendoza is the third-place finisher and Juan Zamora of Hereford finished fourth to earn a spot in the state tournament.

In the 138-pound boys bracket, Daniel Acosta of Dumas is the gold medalist, Randall's Nathaniel Ruiz finished second and Anthony Smith of Tascosa finished third to advance to state. Julia Stevens of Borger finished second in the 132-pound girls bracket.

For the 144-pound boys, Caprock's Richard Davila took home the title, Noah Santiago of Tascosa took second and Ezven Venzor of Dumas finished in fourth. In the 138-pound girls bracket, Elaina Morgan of Dumas is this year's regional champion, while Myleigh Hammarbeck took home fourth.

In the 145-pound girls bracket, Caprock will send a wrestler to state as Kareli Cadena finished fourth. For the boys 150-pound class, Bronson Baxter of Dumas is the champ, Elijah Pena of Randall took second, Caleb Juarez of Caprock finished third.

In the 157-pound boys category, Landin Lamberth of Tascosa was the runner-up while Cesar Enriquez of Hereford took fourth. Morgan Green of Randall finished fourth in the 152-pound girls competition.

In the 165-pound girls class, J'Nessa Reynoso of Randall is this year's champion, Jasmine Vick of Palo Duro is the runner-up, and Keygan Grubb of West Plains finished fourth. Andres Suarez of Tascosa is the boys champion at the 165-pound side. Dumas' Jackson Moss is the runner-up.

In the 175-pound boys group, Randall's Riley Davis is this year's regional champ, Darien Lewis of Palo Duro is the runner-up and Azariah Martinez of Hereford is the fourth-place finisher. For the 185-pound girls group, Dally McConnell of Bushland heads to state after finishing third while Hereford's Mareetza Maceda took fourth.

The final girls event of the weekend was the 285-pound bracket. Dumas' Jolee Jones is the champ while Ariana Maestas of Borger finished in third.

In the 190-pound category, Jaxon Johnson of Tascosa is the regional champ, Alberto Sanchez of Dumas is runner-up, Parker Peterson of Randall takes third and Braden Swanson of Canyon wraps up in fourth.

The final two boys categories were 215-pounds and 285-pounds. Ryan Lofgren of Amarillo High finishes in fourth in the 215 bracket and Eric Lucio of Hereford takes third in the 285 class.
