Dumas, Dalhart police investigating paycheck scam

Two Texas Panhandle police departments are warning about a paycheck scam taking place in the area.

On Tuesday, the Dalhart Police Department shared photos of suspects possibly involved in an organized scam cashing checks. "They have created victims in Moore County and have now hit us locally. Depot Loans/Liquor Store was recently victimized by this group. One of the photos is of a check used during this process. Take note of account numbers if you are cashing multiple checks. Several of the checks in these instances are different business names but the account numbers remain the same," police said.

The Dumas Police Department first reported its investigation into multiple forgeries that reportedly occurred Monday involving fake business checks used in the paycheck scam.

According to police, a local business was entered by multiple unknown persons for the supposed purpose of having their "paychecks" cashed. Police said in a Facebook post that "The local business cashed a number of checks that turned out to be fake business checks under the name of 'Farm Labor Contractor, LLC,' a business based in Dalhart. The checking account at City Bank Texas in Lubbock does not exist."
