Normally, we poke fun at national food holidays and the excitement that comes from, say, a free chocolate chip cookie. But today—Veterans Day—the free food deals carry a little more weight. Veterans and active duty military members can take advantage of a whole host of deals today in thanks for their service, including a free donut from Dunkin', no purchase necessary.

Dunkin' stores across the country are offering the deal—for those who qualify, just drop into a store and tell the cashier you're active military or a veteran and they'll give you a free donut of your choice. To note, it won't work for app orders, so you'll have to skip the mobile order today, or at least order your coffee then walk up to the counter for a donut.

The coffee chain is also introducing a new partnership with an organization called A Million Thanks today, a non-profit that sends letters and cards of thanks and encouragement to service members. Stores offering free donuts also have a supply of letters to hand out with the free snack. If you'd like to participate, Dunkin' is encouraging customers to sent out a message of appreciation to service members on Instagram; select messages will be printed and mailed out to troops via the A Million Thanks organization.

One last thing for those currently serving—you may soon have a Dunkin' on base! This video series follows the journey of George Hart, a retired U.S. Army Major and Dunkin' franchisee who is working toward a goal of opening a Dunkin' on every military base in the United States. Coolattas and frosted donuts for all!!
