Dunkin' wants new restaurant with drive-thru in Somerville

SOMERVILLE – Dunkin' wants its own building with a drive-thru on Route 206.

The Planning Board is scheduled next week to hear a proposal by Moorehouse Marcella, Ltd. Partnership, owner of the strip mall on northbound Route 206 between Orlando Drive and Somerset Street, to build a free-standing Dunkin' in the south end of the 4.55-acre property.

Dunkin' is already a tenant in the strip mall, along with Trinity Rehab, Honest Indian restaurant, a hair salon and a dry cleaner.

Dunkin' wants to build the freestanding building on the part of the property that had already been approved by the borough for a bank with a drive-thru window.

Plans say the traffic circulation for the site will remain the same with an entrance-only at the north end by Walgreens and an exit-only at the south end.

A variance is required because the borough's zoning ordinance does not allow more than one principal building on a property.

Variances are also required for the building setback from Route 206 and the parking setbacks from Route 206 and Washington Place east of the property. A variance is also required for the buffer along Washington Place.

There are three Dunkin' restaurants in the county seat. The others are on Route 22 and West Main Street, but neither has a drive-thru. The Tim Horton's on West End Avenue off the Somerville Circle in Raritan has a drive-thru.

The Planning Board hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 12 in the Council Chambers at police headquarters on South Bridge Street.
