Dunnellon Mayor Bill White resigns, citing health reasons

DUNNELLON − A day after hosting a special meeting to discuss city council goals and priorities, Mayor Bill White has decided to leave his post.

White made the surprise announcement after meeting with City Clerk Mandy Odom on Thursday afternoon.

In an interview with a Star-Banner reporter, White said that after talking with Odom, he went home, typed a letter and emailed it.

In the letter, White wrote: "I regret to inform you that effective immediately, I am resigning my position as Mayor of Dunnellon. I have pre-existing health conditions that need to be addressed. I have enjoyed my 4 years as a member of the Dunnellon City Council."

During the interview, White said his health issue, which he declined to describe, can be triggered under stress. He said he can tell when his condition is aggravated.

The mayor said that while he's "not in bad health," he can tell the issue is "impacting" his health. He said he has visited his doctor twice within the past three months. He said results were not encouraging.

"I'm not happy with how I feel and the doctor is not happy with the results," White said.

The mayor's resignation comes at a time when the city has lost two of its key administrators. Georgina Cid, community development director, has resigned and her last day is Jan. 26. At Wednesday's special meeting, it was stated that Public Works Manager Troy Slattery would leave effective Feb. 23.
