Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. It's March Madness, and Durham is the place to be. WalletHub ranked Durham number one in the report of 2022's Best Cities for College Basketball Fans. Scores are determined by different metrics, including number of teams per city, stadium capacity, social media engagement, and win percentage. (WCNC)

  2. Durham resident, Eric Westrom has forged a friendship with Ukrainian father Dmytro

  3. A major portion of the Durham Freeway was shut down on Thursday morning after a medical emergency caused a driver to crash. According to NCDOT the crash happened on the southbound side of N.C. 147 at Ellis Road around 8:30 am. The condition of the driver has not been released and Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. (CBS17)

  4. In the last couple of months, three HBCUs have been targeted with bomb threats. On Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris announced that federal funding would go towards fighting threats against HBCUs. The schools, including NCCU, will receive between $50,000 and $150,000 for enhanced security and mental health resources for students. (abc11)

  5. Governor Cooper held a news conference on Thursday to address the state of emergency in North Carolina that went into place two years ago. Governor Cooper said that the State of Emergency will remain in place as it is still needed to give flexibility to healthcare providers with surges and distributing vaccines and treatment. (WITN)
