Dust Devil Forms Near Active Volcano in Iceland

A dust devil was spotted swirling near an active volcano in Grindavik, Iceland, in late July.

Andrew Davies recorded this footage while visiting the Litli-Hrutur volcano with his daughter, he said.

“Earlier in the day my daughter and I were hit by a dust devil, beaten with sand, and I lost a hat!” he said, adding that the dust devil, “made quite a spectacle with the smoking lava field and fire from the volcano.”

According to the Icelandic Met Office, on July 10 a “minor volcanic eruption began close to Litli Hrutur in Reykjanes Peninsula.” Initially a 200-meter-long “lava-producing fissure,” the eruption “activity is now focused on one crater,” the office said.

The office encouraged anyone visiting the eruption site to be aware of such hazards as gas emissions, lava flows, and openings of new eruptive fissures without any warning.

“People who enter the area should make themselves aware of these hazards and the designated hazard zone which should by no means be entered,” the office warned. “We also advise visitors to the site to check the wind direction, gas forecast and the level of gas pollution in the area before hiking.” Credit: Andrew Davies via Storyful
