Dutch woman creates gender-neutral card decks

This woman designed a gender-neutral card deck

After noticing that card decks value kings more than queens

Location: Oegstgeest, The Netherlands

Indy Mellink decided to break with the tradition

replacing the images of the king, queen, and jack

with gold, silver, and bronze bars

(SOUNDBITE) (English) 23-YEAR-OLD PSYCHOLOGY STUDENT AND DESIGNER, INDY MELLINK, SAYING:

"I would hope to raise awareness about subtle inequalities as well, like inequalities in card games like this and how that does still influence people in their daily lives as well."

Mellink has sold around 1,500 packs

But some Dutch card players are skeptical about her creation

(SOUNDBITE) (Dutch) TECHNICAL DIRECTOR OF THE DUTCH BRIDGE ASSOCIATION, HANS KELDER, SAYING:

"I have been playing bridge for 36 years now and I never heard that somebody, a woman or a jack would feel undervalued. No, never."
