Dwayne Johnson shares message of inclusion and kindness during MTV acceptance speech

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joined a list of notable celebrities like Sandra Bullock, Tom Cruise and Will Smith when he received the Generation Award during the MTV Movie and TV Awards, which aired Monday.

For more than two decades, Johnson has been a huge star in both professional wrestling and film. Some of his most successful films include Jumanji, Moana and The Mummy Returns.

While receiving the award, Johnson discussed how being authentic helped make him the successful star he is today. He said, “I wasn't gonna conform to Hollywood, Hollywood was gonna conform to me.“ He later added, “I'm proudly half-black and half-Samoan.”

Johnson also discussed the importance of inclusion, both personally and professionally. Johnson said, “Yes it's important to be yourself, but you gotta recognize the joy and the responsibility of bringing everybody with you.” He explained, “You do that by being kind, by being compassionate, by being inclusive, and straight-up, just being good to people, because that matters.”

Johnson ended his speech by sharing a quote, which he referred to as “part of my DNA.” The quote goes, “It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.”
