DWU Classic roundup: Parkston boys pull away from Canistota in fourth quarter

Feb. 11—MITCHELL — All five starters scored in double figures as Parkston used a strong fourth quarter to move past Canistota, 59-49, on Saturday during the DWU Classic at the Corn Palace.

Led by 16 points from Will Jodozi, the Trojans also got 10 points from Sam Benson, Luke Bormann, James Deckert and Kaleb Weber, shooting an efficient 51.1% (24 of 47) from the field for the contest. The starting five accounted for 56 of the Trojans' 59 points and took 45 of Parkston's 47 field goals.

Tage Ortman poured in a game-high 24 points for the Hawks and was the only player in double digits for Canistota.

Parkston outscored Canistota 32-18 in the second half and went 7-for-10 at the free-throw line in the final two quarters, icing the game at the stripe.

Parkston (9-8) hosts Bon Homme on Monday, Feb. 13, while Canistota (8-9) visits Howard on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Hanson outscored Platte-Geddes each quarter en route to a DWU Classic win Saturday at the Corn Palace.

The Beavers took a 29-18 advantage to the halftime break before outscoring Platte-Geddes 29-27 in the second half to grab the win.

Ethan Cheeseman led all scorers, contributing 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists to the winning effort, while Sutton Dewald chipped in 16 points, seven boards and three assists on 7-for-12 shooting.

Tanner Dyk was the leading scorer for the Black Panthers with 16 points, adding seven rebounds to his line. Hayden Sprik also cracked double figures with 10 points.

Hanson outrebounded Platte-Geddes 41-22 and assisted on 17 of its 24 made field goals.

Hanson (11-6) visits Chamberlain on Tuesday, Feb. 14, for its next game, while Platte-Geddes (12-5) matches up with Winner at home Tuesday.

Howard outscored Waubay/Summit 52-30 over the final three quarters, taking down the Mustangs at the DWU Classic on Saturday at the Corn Palace.

Luke Koepsell secured a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in the win, with Ryder Erickson adding 13 points, three assists and four steals and Kolt Koepsell chipping in 11 points. Taiden Hoyer added nine points on 4-for-4 shooting off the bench for the Tigers.

For Waubay/Summit, Damon Opdahl racked up a game-high 21 points and dished out seven assists, while Jonathan Johnston had 14 points and eight rebounds and Jackson Wohlleber contributed nine points and eight assists.

Both teams shot well from the field, with the Tigers shooting 57.1% (24 of 42) and the Mustangs shooting 45.7% (21 of 46), but Howard went 4-for-10 from 3-point range while Waubay/Summit went 7-for-25 (28%).

Howard (12-3) is on the road on Monday, Feb. 13, against Mitchell Christian for its next game. Waubay/Summit (14-2) has its next contest at Leola/Frederick Area on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Four different players scored in double figures for St. Thomas More, as the Cavaliers shot 45.5% in a DWU Classic win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Saturday at the Corn Palace.

Jordan Uhlir was the leader on offense for STM with 20 points, while Caleb Hollenbeck followed closely behind with 19 of his own. Will Green tacked on 12 and Lee Neugebauer poured in 13 off the bench in the win.

In the loss, Reed Rus picked up 26 points on 11-for-17 shooting. The Titans shot 51.2% (22 of 43) from the field as a team, but 18 turnovers and a 28-21 rebounding advantage for STM plagued MVP. Zach Baker and Mason Hetland scored 12 and 11 points, respectively for MVP.

STM outscored MVP in each quarter and assisted on 16 of its 25 made field goals.

MVP (12-5) is back in action Tuesday, Feb. 14, at home against Bon Homme, while STM (16-2) hosts Hot Springs on Tuesday.

Despite a 22-point effort from Mason Sabers, McCook Central/Montrose fell to Centerville in DWU Classic action Saturday at the Corn Palace.

Logan Bobzin matched Sabers with 22 points for the Tornadoes, and Luke Knight added 16 in the win. Alec Austin also notched double figures, pitching in 10 points for Centerville. MCM's Owen Alley scored 10 points.

MCM (9-8) faces Tri-Valley at home on Tuesday, Feb. 14, while Centerville (8-7) hosts Dell Rapids St. Mary on Tuesday.

Led by a 24-point, 12-rebound double-double from Nick Hanson, Viborg-Hurley picked up a win at the DWU Classic, taking down Philip on Saturday at the Corn Palace.

Hanson was one of five double-digit scorers for the Cougars, joined by Brady Schroedermeier, Kobee Sherman and Bryson Morrison, who scored 11 each, and Gage Goettertz, who added 10.

V-H opened up a 40-29 lead at halftime en route to the win and shot 69.2% (18 of 26) from the field and went 4-for-6 from 3-point range in the first half.

Layton Terkildsen notched 16 points in the loss for Philip, while Samuel Hand added 14 points and seven assists and Jesse Filligim chipped in 12.

V-H (14-2) takes on Menno at home on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and Philip (14-4) faces Wall at home on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Behind a 19-5 third-quarter push, Gregory took control and held on to down Bridgewater-Emery in the DWU Classic on Saturday evening at the Corn Palace.

Cruz Klundt recorded 19 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals as Rane Kenny added 10 points and five rebounds for the Gorillas. Daniel Mitchell and Jackson Bolander each chipped in nine points, with Mitchell pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds and Bolander securing seven boards.

Sutton Arend notched 13 points and Camden Stotereau scored 11 for the Huskies. Sam Hofer contributed seven points and eight assists.

In a top-5 Class B clash, No. 4 Lower Brule used a 32-24 second half to down No. 2 White River in the DWU Classic on Saturday night at the Corn Palace.

Four of the Sioux reached double figures in scoring, led by Gavin Thigh's 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists and Ellwyn Langdeau's 15 points and 12 rebounds. Brian LaRoche Jr. added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists, as Tayshawn Battese had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Joe Sayler put up 19 points, 13 rebounds and six assists to lead the Tigers, as Evastine Wright added 14 points and eight rebounds. Nicolas Marshall had seven points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

Hamlin took an early lead and never relinquished it, holding off Class B No. 1 Aberdeen Christian to cap the DWU Classic on Saturday night at the Corn Palace.

Easton Neuendorf led the way for the Chargers, finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Tyson Stevenson tacked on 12 points. Brennan Keszler had seven points and seven rebounds, and Evan Stormo came off the bench to hit a pair of 3s for his six points.

Malek Wieker recorded 13 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Ethan Russell contributed eight points and nine rebounds. Jackson Isakson chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
