DWU Classic roundup: Strong second half helps Lyman girls edge MCM

Feb. 10—MITCHELL — Sklyer Volmer's double-double helped power Lyman to a 44-40 win over McCook Central/Montrose in girls basketball action Friday at the DWU Classic at the Corn Palace.

Volmer posted 12 points to go along with 14 rebounds, three blocks, an assist and a steal, while Mak Scott added 14 points, four assists, four steals, five rebounds and a block.

Michaela McCormick picked up a game-high 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Fighting Cougars in the loss.

Lyman limited MCM to five third-quarter points and held the Fighting Cougars to 5-for-23 (21.7%) shooting from the floor in the second half. All told, Lyman shot 32.5% (13 of 40) from the field, while MCM shot 29.4% (15 of 51).

Lyman (12-5) will face Wall on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 14, while MCM (7-11) goes up against Tri-Valley in a road contest Monday, Feb. 13.

MITCHELL — Three players scored in double figures for Mount Vernon/Plankinton as the Titans took down Corsica-Stickney on Friday at the DWU Classic at the Corn Palace.

Emilee Fox led all scores with 18 points for MVP. She also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, dished out three assists and came up with six steals. Cally Faulhaber added 12 points and Reagan Rus chipped in 10 in the win, while Kyia Schmidt had seven points, six rebounds and five steals.

For C-S, Avery Broughton had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Jacey Kemp added 10 points.

MVP went 5-for-11 from 3-point range in the win, led by Fox, who knocked down three of her four tries. The Titans shot 39.2% (20 of 51), while the Jaguars shot 33.3% (14 of 42).

MVP (11-6) plays Sioux Falls Christian on Saturday, Feb. 11, on the road, while C-S (9-9) goes up against Burke on Saturday at home.

MITCHELL — After falling behind 16-10 after the first quarter, Howard outscored Jones County 27-8 over the second and third quarters en route to a win during the DWU Classic on Friday at the Corn Palace.

Kate Connor poured in 15 points for the Tigers, while Abby Aslesen added a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double and Rylee Rudebusch contributed 10 points.

Howard shot an efficient 9-for-16 (56.3%) from the field in the first half, hitting three of its six 3-point tries. The Tigers finished the game shooting 47.1% (16 of 34) from the floor.

For Jones County, Mallory Valburg had 18 points and 15 rebounds, and Jadyn Jensen picked up 10 points, but the Coyotes shot just 10-for-48 (20.8%) from the floor and went 0-for-15 from 3-point range.

Howard (15-3) takes on Mitchell Christian on the road on Monday, Feb. 13, while Jones County (13-3) goes up against Wolsey-Wessington on Saturday, Feb. 11.

MITCHELL — A 23-point outburst from Oakley Weber led Bridgewater-Emery to a win at the DWU Classic on Friday.

Weber went 7-for-12 from the field and 4-for-6 from 3-point range in the Huskies' win and was the lone Husky in double figures. Summer Koch added two points, 13 rebounds, four assists and five blocks for Bridgewater-Emery.

Defensively, the Huskies limited Pine Ridge to 24.5% (12 of 49) from the floor, surrendering three points in the first quarter. Pine Ridge was led by 14 points from Mollie Little, while Angelina Runnels added 10 points.

Bridgewater-Emery (4-13) takes on Irene-Wakonda on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 14, while Pine Ridge (3-11) squares off with Potter County on Saturday, Feb. 11.

MITCHELL — In a battle between Class A No. 1-ranked Hamlin and Class B No. 1-ranked Viborg-Hurley, it was the Chargers who came out on top at the DWU Classic on Friday at the Corn Palace.

Hamlin started out hot offensively and stayed hot, connecting on 46.9% (23 of 49) of its shots and hitting seven of its 22 3-pointers, including a 4-for-10 second half from 3-point range.

Four different players scored in double figures for the Chargers, led by 25 points from Kami Wadsworth, as she went 10-for-17 from the floor. Addison Neuendorf, Ally Abraham and Marissa Bawdon all tacked on 10 points, with Abraham pulling down 10 rebounds.

For V-H, Denae Mach posted 18 points and Coral Mason chipped in eight points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Hamlin (18-0) remains the lone unbeaten team in girls basketball in the state across all classes. The Chargers will put that to the test on Tuesday, Feb. 14, when they face Britton-Hecla, while V-H (15-3) takes on Menno on Tuesday.

MITCHELL — Despite not having a double-digit scorer, Sioux Falls Christian used a balanced attack to grab a win over St. Thomas More on Friday during the DWU Classic at the Corn Palace.

With SFC leading 28-18 after three quarters, STM made a charge in the fourth quarter, outscoring SFC 14-9 in the final frame, but the Chargers fended off the comeback effort.

Katie Vander Leest led SFC off the bench with eight points, going 2-for-3 from the field. Five other Chargers scored, as the team shot 12-for-30 (40%) from the field. SFC went 6-for-17 (35.3%) from 3-point range and knocked down five of its 10 attempts from behind the arc during the first half.

SFC limited STM to 16 points in each half but held the Cavaliers to two points in the third quarter. Reese Ross had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers, while Jada Mollman tallied a game-high 14 points in the loss.

STM shot 11-for-32 (34.4%) from the field but went just 2-for-17 (11.8%) from 3-point range.

SFC (16-2) has a contest with Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Saturday, Feb. 11, while STM (14-4) turns its attention to a matchup with Douglas on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

MITCHELL — Claire Sheppard erupted for 30 points on 13-for-16 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds, two assists, three blocks and a steal as Flandreau took down Belle Fourche at the DWU Classic on Friday at the Corn Palace.

Lizzie Pavlis chipped in 16 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists in the win, as Flandreau shot 63.9% (23 of 36) from the floor, including a 14-of-20 effort in the second half.

For Belle Fourche, Mataya Ward was the lone double-digit scorer with 11 points. The Broncs went 13-for-50 (26%) from the field as a squad.

Flandreau (13-4) hosts Clark/Willow Lake on Saturday, Feb. 11, while Belle Fourche (10-5) visits Florence/Henry on Saturday.

MITCHELL — A 31-15 halftime advantage helped move Wall past Dell Rapids St. Mary in DWU Classic girls action at the Corn Palace on Friday.

Wall led 20-8 after the first eight minutes and outscored the Cardinals 11-7 in the second quarter.

Paige Kjerstad led the Eagles with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Nora Dinger and Alexis Stephan both added 13 points. Rhea Tucher and April Schulz each pulled down 10 rebounds in the win. Wall outrebounded DRSM 49-34 and came down with 16 offensive boards.

For DRSM, Madala Hanson had 14 points and Ella Griffin chipped in 11 with nine rebounds.

Wall (13-5) hosts Lyman on Tuesday, Feb. 14, while DRSM (15-4) travels to Centerville on Tuesday for its last game of the regular season.

MITCHELL — White River limited Little Wound to six points in the second half, as the Tigers picked up a girls basketball win Friday during the DWU Classic at the Corn Palace.

After outscoring Little Wound 15-3 in the opening quarter, White River took a 30-15 lead to halftime and outscored the Mustangs 17-6 in the second half.

Maleena Brave led all scorers with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Lilly Krogman cracked double-digit points with 10, while also adding eight boards. Talyah Pourier was the leading scorer for Little Wound, dropping nine points off the bench.

White River won the rebounding battle 42-27 and shot 39.5% (17 of 43) from the floor, including an 11-for-21 (52.4%) showing in the first half. The Tigers also knocked down five of their 14 3-point tries, good for a 35.7% clip. Little Wound shot 17.8% (8 of 45) from the field.

White River (8-8) takes on Sully Buttes on Saturday, Feb. 11, while Little Wound (5-11) is back in action Monday, Feb. 13 against Lower Brule.
