DWU football gameday: Tigers back on the road to square off with Hastings

Sep. 23—MITCHELL — Dakota Wesleyan is back on the road to take on Hastings this week. Here's everything to know as the Tigers continue their search for their first win of the campaign.

When: 1 p.m. Saturday.

Where: Wilson Field, Hastings, Nebraska.

Records: DWU (0-4, 0-3 GPAC), Hastings (3-1, 2-1 GPAC).

Coaches: DWU's Ross Cimpl (57-54, 11th season); Hastings' Matt Franzen (5-9, 2nd season).

All-time series: Hastings leads 18-10.

Last meeting: DWU 27, Hastings 16 on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2022 in Mitchell.

Notes: The two teams have split the last 10 matchups, with each team winning five games. ... Saturday's contest is the homecoming game for Hastings. In the preseason coaches poll, DWU was picked No. 7, edging Hastings, who placed No. 8, by nine votes.

About the Tigers: The road contest is the fourth time DWU has played on the road in its first five games this season. ... Starting quarterback Austin Lee exited the game against Dordt last week with an injury, which put backup Connor Drake in the game. Drake went 10-for-17 for 98 yards and a score in the loss. ... DWU is on its first four-game losing streak since 2019 when the Tigers lost a stretch of seven consecutive games.

About the Mustangs: Hastings is currently riding a two-game winning streak with wins over Mount Marty and Concordia. ... Starting quarterback John Zamora has completed 50% of his passes so far this season for 604 yards and eight touchdowns, while throwing three interceptions. He's also added three scores with his legs. ... Defensive lineman Beasley Ihegworo is a threat to get into the backfield for Hastings. He leads the team with 5.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.

Next: DWU is back home on Saturday, Oct. 1 for its homecoming game against Concordia. Hastings remains at home on Oct. 1 to host Briar Cliff.
