DWU football gameday: Tigers close out season hosting Mount Marty

Nov. 4—MITCHELL — The 2022 campaign largely hasn't gone Dakota Wesleyan's way. However, the Tigers football team has a chance to close out the season on a positive note with Mount Marty coming to town for DWU's final contest of the campaign.

Here's what to know ahead of DWU's season finale:

When: 1 p.m. Saturday

Where: Joe Quintal Field.

Records: DWU 1-9, 1-8 GPAC; MMU 3-6, 2-6 GPAC.

Coaches: DWU's Ross Cimpl, 58-59, 11th season; MMU's John Michaletti, 3-16, second season.

Last week: DWU lost 70-14 at Morningside, MMU beat Doane 27-16 at home.

All-time series: DWU leads 1-0.

Last meeting: DWU won 20-3 on the road on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021 in the inaugural meeting in Yankton.

Notes: In last year's game, Jamin Arend ran for 191 yards and a touchdown. Austin Lee also threw for 129 yards and a score. ... DWU is currently last in the GPAC standings at 1-8, while MMU is eighth at 2-6. Both teams have taken down Briar Cliff this season, while MMU has also beaten Doane. ... Both teams struggle to rush the passer, as MMU's 10 sacks on the season are tied for 86th in the country and DWU's six sacks are 95th nationally.

About the Tigers: DWU's 298.5 yards per game ranks 71st in the country out of 97 teams. It's the second year in a row the Tigers have averaged under 300 yards per game on offense and the fifth year in a row they've averaged under 400 yards per game. ... The Tigers' last one-win season was in 2005 (1-9) and a loss would mark the first 10-loss season since 2004 when the Tigers went 1-10. ... Jamin Arend has been one of the bright spots for the Tigers this season. He is one of five players in the country over 1,000 yards at 1,015 and averages 101.5 yards per game, which is eighth in the country.

About the Lancers: MMU is in its second season as a program. After going 0-10 last season, the Lancers picked up their first win of the season against Presentation College on Aug. 25. They also got their first home win last week against Doane. ... The Lancers are 43rd nationally in yards per game at 346.9. They rank 39th in passing yards per game and 47th in rushing yards per contest. ... MMU is tied for last in the country with two interceptions. ... Three of the Lancers' 10 sacks came last week against Doane. ... Isaiah Thompson is MMU's leading rusher with 535 rushing yards this season and six touchdowns. His 535 yards on the ground are 39th in the nation.

Next: For DWU, Saturday marks the final game of its season, while Mount Marty hosts Jamestown on Saturday, Nov. 12 to close out the year.
