DWU women pull away at Hastings for third-straight victory

Jan. 20—HASTINGS, Neb. — After the first 10 minutes on Friday night, it was all Dakota Wesleyan in a women's basketball road contest.

Trailing by six, DWU outscored Hastings 25-10 in the second period and 39-29 in the second half on the way to a 77-58 victory at Farrell Arena in the first game of a back-to-back set in Nebraska.

The Tigers improved to 13-5 on the season with their third-straight victory and 7-5 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. It was the seventh time in the last eight games that DWU has held its opponent to under 60 points.

DWU's three leading scorers — Matti Reiner, Jada Campbell and Isabel Ihnen — combined to score 48 of the Tigers' 77 points in the victory. Reiner led the way with 22 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field, plus had five rebounds and four assists. Campbell had 14 points in 22 minutes and Ihnen finished with 12 points. Morgan Edelman had a game-high nine rebounds for DWU, which led 38-29 at halftime

Hastings (8-11, 4-9 GPAC) was led by 11 points from Alyssa Baker and had nine points from Mariyah Avila, plus eight from Carley Leners. The Broncos shot 41.5% from the field and were 4-for-22 on 3-pointers. DWU forced 20 Hastings turnovers, while the Tigers had only 10 giveaways.

The Tigers' win avenged a 74-70 loss to Hastings on Dec. 3 in Mitchell. DWU is back on the court on Saturday at Doane in Crete, Nebraska. Tip time is 1 p.m.
